Lip, founded in 1867 in Besançon by Emmanuel Lipmann, was the largest French watchmaking manufacturer. Churchill, de Gaulle, and Eisenhower wore Lip. The quartz crisis and the famous social conflict of 1973 marked its decline before a gradual revival from 1990.
This piece is situated in the pivotal period of the Lip manufacture, between the first wristwatches from the calibre 20.3 (1899) and the arrival of the famous T18 in 1933.
The style of the dial and case is characteristic of Lip's production during the 'Roaring Twenties', when Besançon established itself as the heart of French watchmaking.
